In Baldur’s Gate 3, the freedom to redefine your character is just a quest away. If you’ve ever felt the sting of a poor class choice or a misallocated stat point, fear not – Withers, the enigmatic lich, offers a lifeline. For a modest fee of 100 gold, you can reset your character to level one and explore new classes, all while retaining your hard-earned experience. Whether you’re looking to transform Astarion from a rogue into a paladin or simply want to tweak your own build, this guide will walk you through the steps to change class and respec your characters, ensuring your adventure is as dynamic as the choices you make.
Locating Withers may not be an easy task, but it can be accomplished in the beginning stages of the game. It is highly recommended to recruit him as soon as possible since he offers valuable benefits such as reviving fallen companions and providing temporary companions in exchange for a fair amount of gold. So, without further ado, let’s see how to respec your characters and companions in Baldur’s Gate 3.
How to Respec Your Character and Companions in BG3
To respec your character and companions in Baldur’s Gate 3, you will need to locate Withers, the NPC responsible for this function. Withers can be found early in the game, specifically in the Dank Crypt, which you can access shortly after completing the tutorial. Once you have freed Withers from his sarcophagus, he will set up shop at your camp. To initiate the respec process, simply talk to him and select the option to change your class or reset your character’s stats. This service costs 100 gold, allowing you to completely reset your character or companion to Level 1 while retaining all experience points earned, enabling you to level up again with new choices. This flexibility allows players to experiment with different builds, ensuring that the gameplay remains engaging throughout the adventure.
It’s common to build a character and later realize you want to try something else without having to restart the game. Additionally, you may want to respec the abilities and skills of other members of your party.
To start, your task is to locate Withers, who can be found in the Dank Crypt near the starting point after the shipwreck of the Nautiloid Ship. Simply head north along the Ravaged Beach from the wreckage until you reach the area where Shadowheart is attempting to open an Ancient Door near the Overgrown Ruins.
But if you rescued Shadowheart from the Mind Flyer Pod during the Prologue, you’ll find her on the beach unconscious. Wake her up and head up north. To enter the Dank Crypt, you’ll have to unlock the Ancient Door by lockpicking it using a set of Thieves’ Tools you can find in one of the Wooden Barrels on the Ravaged Beach.
Before you attempt to lockpick the Ancient Door, make a quick save to try again in case you fail the sleight of hand check of D20. There are alternative ways leading to the Dank Crypt, but they are far more risky, and we won’t cover them in this guide.
Upon entering through the Ancient Door, two chambers will be visible ahead. The first chamber, with the sarcophagus in the middle of the room, is filled with traps that will wipe out your whole party in a second.
When you open the sarcophagus, the traps will become activated. A successful perception check will reveal the vents, gargoyle heads, and a button on the pillar to the right that can turn off the traps.
If you need additional information on how to disable the sarcophagus trap, check out our quick guide. Grab all the loot from the sarcophagus, including the Engraved Key, which will help us open a door in the next chamber.
Open the Heavy Oak Doors using the Engraved Key to reach another large crypt with a statue on the far wall. Before proceeding, make sure to loot the corpses lying around, as they will soon come back to life. To the northwest side of the statue, perform a perception check to reveal a button that opens a secret door leading to Withers’ sarcophagus.
However, be aware that pushing the button will also animate the corpses. If you have already looted them, they will be easier to fight. After defeating them, you can loot them again and find gold in their pockets. To recruit Withers, simply have a brief conversation with him. He will ask you a philosophical question about mortality before leaving.
Don’t forget to search his sarcophagus for any valuable items. You’ll encounter Withers once more when you return to your camp. If you wish to respec your character or any companion, simply talk to Withers. Let him know that you would like to change your class and respec your character, and for a fee of 100 gold, you will be taken to the character creation screen.
Please keep in mind that you will only be able to alter your class and ability points, not your physical appearance. If you change classes, your level will reset to one, allowing you to level up right away.
