In Baldur’s Gate 3, character customization is a beloved feature, but what happens when you regret your choices? Thankfully, Larian Studios has answered the community’s call for change with the introduction of the Magic Mirror—a tool that allows players to revamp their character’s appearance mid-game. Whether you want to swap hairstyles, modify facial features, or even adjust your character’s voice, this guide will walk you through the simple steps to find and use this transformative mirror. Get ready to embrace a new look on your epic adventure!
Can you change your face and body type?
In Baldur’s Gate 3, players can change their character’s appearance using the Magic Mirror located at their campsite, a feature introduced in Patch 3. This allows for significant customization, including alterations to facial features, hairstyles, eye colors, and accessories. However, there are limitations: players cannot change their character’s race, subrace, or body type after the initial creation. Although this offers a chance to refine one’s avatar mid-game, it does not allow for a complete overhaul of the character’s identity. Players can also temporarily modify their appearance through items like the “Mask of the Shapeshifter,” but these changes revert upon resting.
- In BG3, it is not possible to change the character’s appearance after concluding the character creation wizard section and beginning the actual campaign. For that reason, while at the beginning of your adventure, you should think your choices through and make sure that the hero’s appearance matches your preferences.
- There is a partial exception to this rule, and it involves using Mask of the Shapeshiter. This is a magic headwear that allows casting a Shapeshift spell. Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean full freedom to change the appearance of a character, but rather randomizes your look (new race, face, male or female body type) following the casting of the spell. The effect is also temporary.
The mask is only available to the owners of Digital Deluxe version. We describe how to find and use it on a dedicated page How does the Mask of the Shapeshifter work?.
Changing the appearance of items
Changing your character’s appearance in Baldur’s Gate 3 is a straightforward process thanks to the introduction of the Magic Mirror feature, which allows for customization after the initial character creation. Players can access this mirror at their camp and modify various aspects of their character’s look, including hairstyles, facial structures, eye colors, and even voice types. This feature is completely free and can be used as many times as desired, offering a chance to refine or completely overhaul your character’s appearance as you progress through the game. However, it’s important to note that certain elements, such as race and body type, cannot be altered once the game has begun, ensuring that players maintain some consistency in their character’s identity throughout their adventure.
- In Baldur’s Gate 3, the current appearance of your hero is affected by the currently equipped items (armor, cloth, headgear, etc.). Interestingly enough, you can change the color of equipped items.
- The merchants all over the world of the game offer Dyes and the first opportunity to buy them appears in Druid Grove (merchant Arron – screenshot above). The name of the dye gives you information about its color (green in our example).
- After purchasing, move the Dye to the inventory of the hero whose items you want to apply the color to, press RMB on the dye and choose Combine.
- An new window will open. You need to move the item you want to dye to the right slot (armor in our case) and click on the Combine button.
- The item should change its colour, but the degree of effect may vary. For example, with some items, the change may be very visible, in others (e.g. Plate Armour) it will be really subtle. We recommend saving the game before dyeing, as the Dye is lost after the process, and you may find the end result unsatisfactory.
