Lump the Enlightened

Lump the Enlightened is a unique character in Baldur’s Gate 3, known for his surprising intelligence and eloquence, which sets him apart from typical ogres. Located in the Blighted Village, he commands a small group of ogres, Chock and Fank, and serves as a potential ally or adversary depending on the player’s choices. Players can engage with Lump through various dialogue options, including persuasion or deception, to convince him to fight on their behalf. Successfully recruiting him grants access to Lump’s War Horn, allowing players to summon him and his companions in battle up to three times. However, should negotiations fail, Lump can become a formidable opponent due to his spellcasting abilities and tactical acumen. Defeating him yields valuable loot, including the Warped Headband of Intellect, enhancing the wearer’s intelligence significantly.

Lump the Enlightened is an extremely eloquent, intelligent ogre, hired by Goblins to do their dirty work. He fights alongside his minions, Chock and Fank, both way dumber than him.

You can hire Lump the Enlightened for the right amount of gold and call him into battle if needed, or outtalk him to hire him for free. You can also attack and kill the Ogres to get a valuable item.

Preparing for the battle against Lump the Enlightened

To prepare for the battle against Lump the Enlightened in Baldur’s Gate 3, players should first assess their surroundings in the Blighted Village, where Lump and his two ogre companions, Chock and Fank, await. It’s crucial to take note of potential environmental hazards, such as a trap hanging above one of the ogres and a pillar that can be collapsed to drop a boulder on them. Positioning your party on high ground will provide a significant tactical advantage, allowing for better accuracy while minimizing the risk of being attacked directly by Lump. Ensure your party is ready with spells and ranged attacks, as Lump is not only physically strong but also capable of spellcasting, making him a primary target. Engaging him effectively requires careful planning and awareness of both his abilities and the battlefield layout.

Before engaging Lump’s party, look around the destroyed room and take note of some potential threats. There are some objects nearby the Ogres can use during battle.

Look at the trap hanging above one of the Ogres. You can collapse a pillar to drop a boulder on its head, but be careful – the Ogre nearby can do the same. If any party member of yours stands near the boulder, they’ll end up crushed, damaged and likely dead.

There are many objects scattered throughout the room, such as barrels and chairs. The Ogres will try to reach them and throw them at you. Thankfully they don’t deal much damage (ranging from 2 to 4) and the Ogres have lousy accuracy.

Before engaging Lump and his allies, you should position your party on high ground in advance to increase your chances.

Climb the stone steps to the left of the ruined hut to reach the roof. If you can’t climb the low-hanging roof, just jump there.

Once you’re at the top, place your party members on the exposed beam. This will give them some solid ground and a line of sight of the Ogres below them.

How to defeat Lump the Enlightened?

To defeat Lump the Enlightened in Baldur’s Gate 3, strategic positioning and swift action are crucial. Begin by placing your party on high ground to gain an advantage in accuracy against Lump and his minions, Chock and Fank. As Lump is a spellcaster, he should be your primary target; focus on eliminating him quickly to prevent him from using his powerful abilities. Once his health drops to half, he will create mirror images of himself, complicating your attacks. Continue to target him until he is defeated, then shift your focus to his allies. With careful planning and effective use of the environment, such as collapsing nearby pillars or taking advantage of objects to throw, you can secure a victory with minimal losses to your party. After the battle, you can loot valuable items, including the Warped Headband of Intellect, from Lump’s remains.

With your party positioned on the roof, they’ll have High Ground advantage on the enemies, drastically increasing their accuracy. Lump’s guards won’t be able to reach them, so they’ll be limited to throwing things. That’s not the case with Lump though, as he can still easily hurt you.

He’s capable of spellcasting, making him very dangerous. This makes him your primary target – eliminate him as soon as possible.

Once he drops to half health, he’ll create three mirror images of himself, which significantly reduce your accuracy against him, as the images can take hits for him. Keep attacking until he falls.

Once he’s down, focus on one of this guards. Chock usually stands to the right, using nearby objects as improvised weapons. A couple good hits should be enough to take him down.

Fank, the last surviving opponent, shouldn’t pose too much of a threat after that – you’ll most likely finish him quickly, finishing the battle without losing any party members.

Rewards for defeating Lump the Enlightened

Defeating Lump the Enlightened in Baldur’s Gate 3 yields significant rewards that enhance your character’s capabilities. Upon his defeat, players can loot a Warped Headband of Intellect, a rare item that boosts the wearer’s Intelligence to 17, making it highly valuable for spellcasters or characters reliant on intelligence-based skills. Additionally, players will find Lump’s journal and some gold, providing both lore and monetary benefits. This combination of items not only enriches the player’s inventory but also contributes to character development, making the encounter with Lump a worthwhile challenge.

What are the best strategies to convince Lump to join your side

To successfully convince Lump the Enlightened to join your side in Baldur’s Gate 3, players can employ several strategic approaches during the encounter in Blighted Village. Here are the best methods:

Dialogue Options and Checks

  1. Show the Brand: If your character has been branded by True Soul Gut, simply showing the brand will prevent Lump from attacking you and open up dialogue options.
  2. Deception: If you lack the brand, use a Deception check (DC 10) to convince Lump that you are one of the Absolute’s chosen disciples. This can turn him from foe to friend without escalating to combat.
  3. Intimidation: Characters with high intimidation skills can threaten Lump. For example, a Barbarian can say “I’m feeling hungry…” or a Paladin can declare, “Try to eat me and I’ll brand your corpse with my oath.” Both options require a DC 10 check to succeed.
  4. Persuasion: After establishing rapport, you can persuade Lump to abandon his goblin allies and fight for you instead. Offer him gold—initially suggesting 500 gold for his services, or negotiate up to 1000 gold after he fights for you.
  5. Additional Checks: If you want to avoid paying upfront, use further Deception or Persuasion checks (DC 15-20) to convince him that he will be compensated after subsequent battles.

Summoning and Rewards

Once convinced, Lump will give you his War Horn, allowing you to summon him and his ogre companions into battle up to three times. This is particularly useful for challenging encounters as they can provide significant support.

Key Tips

  • Save Before Engaging: Given the variable nature of checks, save your game before attempting any persuasion or deception.
  • Utilize High Ground: If combat becomes necessary, positioning your party on higher ground can provide advantages against Lump and his allies.
  • Plan for Follow-ups: If you promise Lump gold, be prepared for him to return later in camp seeking payment, where further intimidation checks can allow you to avoid paying if desired.

By effectively navigating these dialogue options and checks, players can recruit Lump the Enlightened as a powerful ally rather than facing him in combat.

What are the best dialogue options to use when convincing Lump

To effectively convince Lump the Enlightened to join your side in Baldur’s Gate 3, players can utilize specific dialogue options and strategies during their encounter. Here are the best options:

Key Dialogue Options

  1. Show the Brand: If you have been branded by True Soul Gut, simply showing him the brand will prevent any conflict and establish you as a friend.
  2. Deception: If you lack the brand, use a Deception check (DC 10) with the line:
    • “I’ll do you one better – I’m one of the Absolute’s chosen disciples.”
  3. Intimidation: Characters with high intimidation skills can threaten Lump:
    • Barbarian: “What about you? I’m feeling hungry…” (DC 10)
    • Paladin: “Try to eat me and I’ll brand your corpse with my oath.” (DC 10)
  4. Persuasion: After establishing rapport, you can persuade Lump to work for you instead of the goblins:
    • Offer him 500 gold for his services.
    • Propose 1000 gold after he fights for you.
  5. Flesh of the Fallen: For those willing to take a risk, use a high DC Persuasion check (DC 20):
    • “I’ll pay you in the flesh of the fallen – you’ll have your fill.”
  6. Follow-Up Options: If you initially succeed in convincing him, further dialogue options may allow you to negotiate or reinforce your deal after battles.

Additional Strategies
