How to Defeat Raphael in the House of Hope in BG3

Guides

The Raphael fight in Baldur’s Gate 3’s House of Hope is one of the toughest battles in the game. This cambion pulls no punches, and he has the stats to back up his arrogant attitude. You’ll face a literal hellish onslaught of fire, chains, and soul-rending attacks. But with the right prep and strategy, you can take him down and walk away with some of the best loot in the game.

This guide covers everything you need to know. We’ll break down Raphael’s stats, how to enter the House of Hope, how to free Hope, and a phase-by-phase strategy for the fight itself.

Who Is Raphael

Raphael is a cambion – a half-fiend, half-mortal – who runs a shady business from his pocket dimension called the House of Hope. In Baldur’s Gate 3, he positions himself as a dealmaker who offers to solve your problems, but always at a terrible price. Think of him as a classic devil: charismatic, cunning, and absolutely ruthless.

He first appears early in Act 1, offering to remove the tadpole from your brain. If you refuse (which you should), he becomes a recurring antagonist. He’s not just talk, either. When you finally face him in his own domain, you’re up against one of the most powerful enemies in the game.

How to Enter the House of Hope

The House of Hope isn’t a place you stumble into by accident. You need to find a portal, and that portal is located at Devil’s Fee, a shop in the Lower City of Baldur’s Gate. Talk to the owner, Helsik, and she’ll sell you the information – and the items – needed to open a portal to Raphael’s domain.

You can bribe, persuade, or steal the ritual components from Helsik. The key items are an Infernal Marble, Enchanted Ink, and a Financial Report. Once you have everything, head to the ritual circle in the shop’s upper level and use the items to open the portal. Step through, and you’re in.

Important: You can sneak into the House of Hope even if you previously accepted Raphael’s deal. The portal works regardless.

How to Free Hope

Once inside the House of Hope, your secondary objective is to free a character named Hope. She’s being held in a prison deep in the dungeon. To free her, you need the Orphic Hammer – a special weapon that can shatter the crystals imprisoning her.

Here’s the thing: you can get the Orphic Hammer from Raphael’s vault without needing to sign a deal with him. Just fight or sneak your way in. When you reach Hope, use the hammer on the two crystals holding her. She’ll join your party for the remainder of the level and, most importantly, for the final fight against Raphael.

Hope is not just a rescue target. She becomes a powerful ally. Her abilities include Revoke Guest Status, which can banish one enemy from the fight (she can do this twice), and Divine Intervention, which can restore your entire party’s HP and spell slots.

Recruiting Yurgir

If you completed Yurgir’s questline in Act 2 – specifically by killing the rat at the base of Lady Shar’s statue in the Gauntlet of Shar – you can recruit him for the Raphael fight. Head to the bar area in the House of Hope and find him there. You’ll need to pass a DC30 Persuasion check to convince him to fight alongside you.

If you didn’t complete his Act 2 quest, or if you fail the check, you’ll have to fight him instead. He’ll show up as a summon during the Raphael battle and attack both you and Raphael’s forces, but having him on your side makes the fight significantly easier.

Preparation: Party, Gear, and Spells

)

The Raphael fight is no joke. You should be at level 11–12 before attempting it. This is an endgame encounter with an enemy who has 666 HP and an AC of 27.

Party Composition:

  • A Barbarian or Fighter is ideal. High-HP melee characters can absorb punishment and deal consistent damage.
  • A Warlock or Sorcerer with Eldritch Blast is great for consistent ranged damage.
  • Avoid Paladins and Clerics who rely on Radiant damage. Raphael’s Punish Divinity ability reflects Radiant damage back as fire and can stun the attacker.
  • A Wizard or Bard with crowd control spells is extremely valuable.

Key Gear:

  • Equip characters with fire-resistant gear. Items like the Flail of Ages (cold damage) or any weapon that deals Bludgeoning or Force damage are ideal, since Soul Pillars are vulnerable to those damage types.
  • Stock up on potions, especially fire resistance potions and healing potions.
  • Grab some Grease Jars from the environment before the fight. Grease + fire = area denial on the floor.

Spells to Prepare:

  • Counterspell – though it’s unreliable against Raphael’s higher-level spells, it’s still worth having.
  • Polymorph, Hold Monster, Tasha’s Hideous Laughter, Otto’s Irresistible Dance – crowd control spells work on Raphael.
  • Silence – can prevent him from casting verbal spells.
  • Fire resistance spells or potions for the entire party.
  • Bludgeoning and Force damage spells (Eldritch Blast, Magic Missile, etc.).

Raphael Fight Breakdown: Stats and Abilities

Here’s what you’re up against. Raphael is a Fiend (Medium size, 80 kg) with the following stats:

Stat Value
HP 666
AC 27
Speed 9m
Strength 18 (+4)
Dexterity 28 (+9)
Constitution 17 (+3)
Intelligence 14 (+2)
Wisdom 13 (+1)
Charisma 19 (+4)

Resistances: Nonmagical weapon attacks, Lightning, Cold, Poison
Immunities: Fire

Key Abilities:

  • Punish Divinity: Reflects Radiant damage as fire and can stun the attacker.
  • Severed Soul: Creatures at 0 HP get Disadvantage on Attack Rolls and Ability Checks.
  • Ascended Form: Raphael transforms at roughly 50–70% HP. In this form, he gains Hellfire Inferno (20d6 fire damage, costs 2 soul charges), Diabolic Chains (10d8 fire damage), and Multiattack Claws.
  • Soul Pillars: There are 4 pillars in the room. Each one has roughly 100 HP and is immune to necrotic, fire, poison, and psychic damage. They resist piercing but are vulnerable to Bludgeoning and Force. Each active pillar gives Raphael +1d12 fire damage and +3 to Dexterity saves and checks.

This fight is a marathon. Manage the pillars, manage the adds, and chip away at his massive HP pool.

Phase 1: Defeat Cambions and Korrilla

Managing Allies

The fight starts with Raphael summoning Cambions and his housekeeper Korrilla. Korrilla is relatively weak with only 24 HP and resistance to Poison, so she’s not a priority. The Cambions are more dangerous, but they’re still manageable.

Strategy:

  • Focus fire on the Cambions first. They deal decent damage but go down quickly with concentrated attacks.
  • Kill Korrilla when she gets in your way. She’s annoying but not threatening.
  • Have your tank engage the Cambions while your ranged characters focus on the Soul Pillars.
  • If you recruited Yurgir, he’ll help clear the adds while you deal with the pillars.

Honestly, don’t waste your big abilities here. Save your spell slots and special attacks for the later phases.

Phase 2: Destroy the Soul Pillars

The Soul Pillars are the key to this fight. While they’re active, Raphael gets a massive buff: extra fire damage on every attack and better Dexterity saves. Taking them down weakens his power significantly.

Strategy:

  • Pillars are vulnerable to Bludgeoning and Force damage. Use these damage types. Eldritch Blast, Magic Missile, and melee characters with maces or hammers are your best bet.
  • Pillars are immune to necrotic, fire, poison, and psychic. Don’t waste those damage types.
  • They resist piercing, so ranged physical attacks with bows are less effective.
  • Each pillar has roughly 100 HP. Focus fire on one pillar at a time rather than spreading damage.
  • If you have a character with Great Weapon Master or Sharpshooter, they can burn through pillar HP quickly.

Trust me, destroying all four pillars is your top priority before moving to the final phase.

Phase 3: Defeat Raphael

Once the pillars are down and the adds are cleared, it’s time to focus on Raphael himself. This is where the fight gets serious.

When Raphael drops to around 50–70% HP, he enters Ascended Form. He gains access to Hellfire Inferno, which deals 20d6 fire damage, Diabolic Chains (10d8 fire damage), and Multiattack Claws. This is the most dangerous phase.

Strategy:

  • Use Hope’s Revoke Guest Status to banish Raphael temporarily. This gives you a few rounds to reposition or heal.
  • Cast crowd control spells on Raphael. Polymorph, Hold Monster, and Otto’s Irresistible Dance all work. This can neutralize him for several rounds.
  • Focus all your damage on Raphael. The pillars are down, the adds are dead – it’s just him now.
  • Have your healer use Divine Intervention if your party gets low on HP or spell slots.
  • Fire resistance is critical. Everyone should have it active.
  • Don’t use Radiant damage. Raphael’s Punish Divinity will reflect it back as fire and stun your character.

Honour Mode Tips

If you’re attempting this fight on Honour Mode, the stakes are even higher. One death and your run is over.

  • Scout ahead. Before entering the final room, make sure your party is fully rested and healed. There’s a restoration pool in Raphael’s bedroom – use it before the fight.
  • Cheese the fight with Grease Jars. Grease on the floor + fire damage = persistent fire zones that damage enemies every turn. This can soften up the Cambions and damage Raphael over time.
  • Use the environment. The pillars can be destroyed with environmental damage if you’re creative.
  • Save scum (if not Honour Mode). If you’re not on Honour Mode, quicksave before each phase. This fight has a lot of variables.
  • Have a contingency plan. If things go sideways, Hope’s Divine Intervention is your emergency button. Don’t waste it early.

What You Get for Winning

The loot from this fight is worth the effort. Raphael drops the Helldusk Armor, one of the best heavy armors in the game. It gives you high AC and fire resistance, perfect for tanks.

After freeing Hope, she rewards you with the Gloves of Soul Catching. These gloves give you additional force damage on unarmed strikes and a chance to heal when you land a hit. They’re incredible for Monks and unarmed Fighters.

You’ll also get the satisfaction of taking down one of the most arrogant characters in Baldur’s Gate 3.
