Master Los Santos’ chaos with GTA 5’s user interface-your map to mayhem lies in its menus and icons.

Armor bar – When you buy an armor at Ammu-Nation, you will receive protection from shots. Each shot takes some of the bar first, instead of the health bar. The length of the bar depends on the type of armor that you bought.

Special skill bar – Each one of the three protagonists has a special skill, which you can activate bby pressing L3 and R3 simultaneously. The bar determines how long this skill can be on. It regenerates by performing special activities e.g. driving without collisions in the case of Franklin.

Vehicle/location/character selection – Here, you will see the name of the vehicle and the name of the area that you currently are in, will be displayed. While on mission that includes more than one protagonist, the icons of the available protagonists will also be displayed.

Wanted Level – The stars inform you about whether you are currently chased by the police and what the strength of the police forces is.
While performing a transaction (e.g. while in a store) the current amount of available cash and losses, or gains, will be displayed here.

Ammunition – The amount of ammo for the currently used weapon. The first digit is a combined number and the gray one is the number of bullets in the clip.

Hints – The game will display here, sometimes, hints and tricks to the currently performed missions.

How do I customize HUD elements and toggle individual indicators in GTA 5

GTA 5 offers limited native options to toggle the entire HUD on or off, but individual element customization like minimap, health bars, or objectives requires menu settings or mods. Access these through the pause menu under Settings > Graphics or Display for basic toggles. Console players have fewer options than PC users, where mods expand functionality significantly.

Native HUD Settings

Navigate to Pause > Settings > Graphics to toggle Expanded HUD Off for a cleaner minimap and objective display. Disable the full Heads-Up Display here to hide health, armor, ammo counters, and radar entirely during gameplay. Cinematic mode achieves a similar effect by minimizing indicators for screenshots or immersion.

Platform-Specific Toggles

On consoles (PS4/PS5, Xbox), use Settings > Display to turn HUD on/off globally, affecting all indicators like wanted stars and GPS routes. PC players access the same via ESC > Settings > Graphics, with additional keybinds like V for view switching that indirectly alters radar visibility. No granular per-element toggles exist without mods.

Mods for Customization

PC mods like VHud or SimpleHUD enable toggling individual elements such as health bars, speedometers, or seatbelt indicators via F12 config menus. Features include drag-and-drop positioning, visibility switches for armor/fuel bars, and dynamic scaling. Install from GTA5-Mods.com, but back up files and use Script Hook V for compatibility.

Keybinds and Tips

Interaction Menu (M on PC, touchpad on PS) lets you manage related elements like passive mode visuals indirectly. For turn signals or vehicle HUD tweaks, mods add indicators toggled by keys like K. Test changes in single-player first to avoid Online bans.

Best GTA V mods to customize individual HUD elements and indicators

GTA V mods greatly expand HUD customization on PC by allowing toggles, resizing, repositioning, and styling of individual elements like health bars, minimaps, and speedometers. Top options focus on single-player compatibility via Script Hook V, with in-game menus for tweaks. Always back up files before installing from GTA5-Mods.com.

VHud

VHud stands out for its comprehensive controls over health, armor, hunger, thirst, fuel, seatbelt, cash display, and speedometer. Players toggle visibility, adjust size/position, and access config via F12, with auto-save for settings. Features like progress bars and store interactions enhance realism without overwhelming the screen.

SimpleHUD

SimpleHUD offers clean toggles for speedometer (MPH/KPH switch, color changes), compass (N marker), road highlights, and core indicators. Scale or disable elements individually through its menu, ideal for minimalistic setups. Updated versions support GTALua or SHVDN3 for easy LemonUI integration.

FuturisticHUD

FuturisticHUD [GTALua] delivers a modern reskin with customizable accents on numbers, stars, and key icons. Toggle or highlight vital elements like objectives and wanted levels for better visibility. Suited for players seeking stylistic overhauls alongside functional tweaks.
