Is there a way to get the sniper rifle without doing missions?

Guides

A riflescope can turn a simple weapon into a precision tool, but getting it in Red Dead Redemption 2 takes more than just cash. Here’s how to upgrade your aim and make every shot count.

The problem with having no scope can be solved rather easily – visit any of the Gunsmiths. One of them is in Valentine, the town that you reach at the beginning of the second chapter.

Speak with a gunsmith. Select the Customize option. After that you will open the Components menu.

Select Scope from the list of components. After that you can select one of the scopes.

Note – Scopes are installed separately for every weapon. You can be forced to, i.e. buy one scope for your favorite repeater rifle and one for your favorite carbine. Install a scope to get a sniper rifle.

After you have completed certain parts of the game’s story, you can also get a ready-made sniper rifle. This is the task “The Sheep of the Goats” commissioned by John Marston, which involves stealing sheep and bringing them to the farm. This is one of the final main tasks of the second chapter of the campaign. In order to complete this mission, the heroes will visit a gun shop in Valentine and you will be able to choose Rolling Block Rifle from the offer for free.

Which gunsmiths sell scopes in chapter 2

In Chapter 2, any unlocked gunsmith can sell and install scopes, but the earliest and most practical one is the Valentine gunsmith.

Gunsmiths with scopes in Chapter 2

  • Valentine Gunsmith (Valentine)

    • Available as soon as Chapter 2 begins.

    • You can buy a Springfield Rifle and add a short/long scope through the Customize → Components → Scope menu.

  • Rhodes Gunsmith (Rhodes)

    • The town becomes accessible during Chapter 2 and its gunsmith stocks the same weapon components (including scopes) once the relevant rifles are unlocked.

  • Saint Denis Gunsmith (Saint Denis)

    • The city area can technically be visited early; its gunsmith also offers the same catalog, including scopes for compatible rifles, provided you have progressed enough for those guns to unlock.

In practice, Valentine is the intended and most convenient place in Chapter 2 to buy a rifle and immediately fit it with a scope.

Which scope models become available in chapter 2

In Chapter 2, you can first access basic rifle scopes, specifically the Short Scope and Long Scope for compatible rifles like the Springfield Rifle; specialized sniper scopes only appear later with dedicated sniper rifles such as the Rolling Block and Carcano.

Scope types in Chapter 2

  • Short Scope

    • Attachable to early rifles such as the Springfield once you can buy and customize them at a gunsmith.

    • Intended for medium-range engagements and becomes available as soon as rifle customization opens in Chapter 2.

  • Long Scope

    • Also unlocks for the same rifles around the time you can purchase them in Chapter 2, giving better zoom for long-range shots.

    • Required later for certain Sharpshooter challenge distances when used on long-scope rifles.

Sniper rifle scopes timing

  • The Rolling Block Rifle and its fixed sniper scope are tied to late Chapter 2 story progression and then become available more generally afterward.

  • The Carcano Rifle and its scope appear in a later chapter, so that particular sniper scope is not normally obtainable during Chapter 2.
