How To Unlock All Challenges In Red Dead Redemption 2

Guides

Hidden across the rugged trails and dusty towns of Red Dead Redemption 2 lies a set of trials that test skill, patience, and grit. From sharpshooting to survival feats, these challenges demand both mastery and a sharp eye for detail-each one bringing players closer to true outlaw legend status.

The challenges in RDR2 can be extremely unintuitive. In order to unlock the challenges in a given category, you must perform an action that includes the first challenge, e.g. killing someone quietly with a knife. Only at this point will the game reveal the challenge to you. Another challenge of a given type will only be unlocked when you finish first one. The same goes for the third, fourth and tenth challenge. You have to perform all of them in order.

However, you can perform challenges from other categories at the same time. There’s nothing to stop you from doing the challenges of an herbalist and a horseman at the same time.

We’ve made a list to help you unlock challenges:

Bandit – attack a citizen.

Explorer – find a treasure map.

Gambler – win in poker.

Herbalist – collect a yarrow.

Horseman – Kill a rabbit on horseback.

Master Hunter – skin a deer.

Survivalist – catch a fish.

Sharpshooter- Kill a bird in flight.

Weapons Expert – Kill 3 enemies using only a knife.

Which challenge tracks unlock first and in what order

Challenge tracks in Red Dead Redemption 2 do not all unlock at once; instead, the first challenge in each of the nine categories (Bandit, Explorer, Gambler, Herbalist, Horseman, Master Hunter, Sharpshooter, Survivalist, Weapons Expert) unlocks individually through natural early-game progression, with no fixed global order beyond what’s triggered by your actions.

Earliest Unlocks

The initial challenges become available as you perform specific basic activities during Chapter 2 or earlier missions, often without deliberate effort.

  • Explorer 1 unlocks first overall by simply picking up any treasure map, such as the Jack Hall Gang map from a chest near Flatneck Station after “Who is Not Without Sin” (available very early).

  • Sharpshooter 1 follows soon after by killing two different birds or animals with one shot each, which happens naturally while hunting.

  • Weapons Expert 1 activates via three tomahawk kills on enemies, common in early combat.

  • Master Hunter 1 by studying every animal species in one region (e.g., New Hanover).

Typical Progression Order

The remaining tracks unlock in this rough sequence based on story beats and common player paths, though exact timing varies:

  • Bandit 1: Hold up five townsfolk (post-Chapter 2 outlaw activities).

  • Herbalist 1: Pick 10 Orchis plants (easy foraging near camp).

  • Survivalist 1: Catch an animal with a barehanded method (e.g., rabbit with your hands).

  • Horseman 1: Kill someone from horseback with a gun (frequent in ambushes).

  • Gambler 1: Play poker at Flatneck Station (unlocks after “Who is Not Without Sin”).

Once a category’s first challenge appears in the Player menu (L1/LB > Challenges), complete it sequentially to unlock the next rank in that track; prior actions count retroactively.

List the first three challenge tracks and their unlock conditions

Explorer, Sharpshooter, and Weapons Expert are the first three challenge tracks to typically unlock in Red Dead Redemption 2, as they trigger through basic early-game actions like exploration and combat.

Unlock Conditions

These activate automatically once you perform the required task, often in Chapter 1 or early Chapter 2.

  • Explorer 1: Pick up any treasure map, such as the Jack Hall Gang map from a chest northwest of Flatneck Station (available after “Who is Not Without Sin” mission).

  • Sharpshooter 1: Kill two different birds or animals with the same shot (e.g., use Dead Eye to target a bird and a rabbit aligned behind it).

  • Weapons Expert 1: Kill three enemies with a thrown tomahawk (stock up from camp and use in early fights like against O’Driscolls).
