Red Dead Redemption 2 best weapons recommendations, how to get gun mods

Guides

Ambush, precision, and the weaponry that defines a legendary outlaw-our definitive guide to RDR2’s most deadly tools.

General information

  1. You don’t have to look for better weapons right after starting the game. Arthur’s starting weapons and those received from other gang members are enough for completing the missions. Better weapons are useful when you want to eliminate enemies faster or when you plan on hunting – this will increase your chance of killing an animal with one shot.
  2. The bow is a unique weapon – you can’t find better versions of it. You can only change your arrows.
  3. At first, many of the weapons offered at a gunsmith will have a lock icon. These weapons can’t be purchased by Arthur, at least not now. You need to make enough progress in the storyline to unlock them. Arthur can also receive some of them during some of the main missions.
  4. Besides getting better weapons, you should also remember about buying or crafting better ammo. Some of them allow you to, i.e. deal even more damage or reduce the risk of damaging an animal’s skin.
  5. Many of the weapons can be upgraded at a gunsmith – try to purchase all the upgrades available to your favorite weapons. Unique weapons (i.e. those used by defeated gunslingers) have better base stats, but these weapons can’t be upgraded. Remember about that. Upgrade “regular” weapons to make them even more powerful than the unique ones.
  6. Every weapon can wear out. Always carry a Gun Oil and use it every few in-game hours to keep your weapon in good condition. A worn out weapon isn’t useless, but you can notice the drops in all the stats (accuracy, damage, reload etc.).
  7. Remember that Arthur receives an off-hand holster after one of the main missions. This allows you to get a second good revolver or a different sidearm. Thanks to that you will be able to shoot from two weapons at the same time.

The best revolvers in RDR2

Schofield Revolver is one of the best revolvers in the game. This weapon can be acquired in two ways. You can get it faster by learning about the illegal business behind the drug store in Valentine (look through the window). Then, you have to rob the store and force the doctor to open the door at the back of the store. The room has a few enemies – kill them fast. After that, you can look for the revolver.

Another way to get the aforementioned weapon is to complete Blessed Are the Meek? quest available in the second chapter. From now on you can purchase this revolver at all the gunsmith stores. Schofield Revolver should cost you $84.

The gunslingers from The Noblest of Men, and a Woman also drop very good revolvers. The picture above shows one of them – Granger’s Revolver. Remember – unique weapons can’t be upgraded which means that you can’t increase their base stats.

Another interesting weapon is called Double-Action Revolver. This revolver deals less damage and has worse accuracy than Cattleman Revolver, Arthur’s “starting” weapon. However, Double-Action Revolver has a better rate of fire and reload time. An interesting weapon if you want to shoot fast at a close distance without precise aiming.

This revolver can be purchased after A Strange Kindness mission available in the second chapter. Double-Action Revolver costs $65. There is also an alternate way of getting this weapon – you can get it while you and Sean are robbing one of the homesteads in chapter 3 – its description can be found in Dutch’s Gang Missions and Jobs chapter (Home Roberry – Sean part).

The best other sidearms in RDR2

Pistols are one of the most important sidearms in the game. Volcanic Pistol is a great choice – you can purchase it after reaching chapter 2 (it costs $150). Volcanic Pistol deals a lot of damage, at least for a sidearm, but it has reduced fire rate and ammo capacity.

Semi-Automatic Pistol is a great choice for all players who want to have a sidearm with great fire rate. As the name suggests, this is a semi-automatic pistol which means that you can overwhelm your enemies with bullets. This pistol can’t be unlocked right away. It becomes available after completing The Joys of Civilization in chapter 4. This weapon costs a lot – you will need $210.

If you don’t want to wait until you reach chapter 4, you can do The Noblest of Men, and a Woman side quest. One of the objectives in this quest is to defeat Billy Midnight – this allows you to get Midnight’s Pistol (see the picture above). Remember – unique weapons can’t be upgraded which means that you can’t increase their base stats.

It is easy to forget about one of the sidearms, the Sawed-Off Shotgun. This is a perfect weapon for dealing massive damage at a short distance. You can use it to kill humans, wolves and other predators. The first Sawed-Off Shotgun is received automatically after starting Enter, Pursued by a Memory mission. The second copy of this weapon (if you want to use two Sawed-Off Shotguns at the same time) can be purchased at a gunsmith for $85.

Note – Remember that this weapon requires constant reloading. A Sawed-Off Shotgun isn’t a good choice when you have to deal with larger groups of enemies.

The best regular and repeater carbines in RDR2

In our opinion, repeater carbines are the most interesting option for the majority of the fights in the game. They have a great fire rate and are useful in attacking enemies at a medium distance. Remember, you don’t have to buy any of these weapons – Arthur will receive them during the storyline. Lancaster Repeater is a weapon that will probably be used by you throughout the majority of the game. You receive it during An American Pastoral Scene main quest in chapter 2. Go ahead and upgrade this weapon – the next repeater rifle is received in chapter 6.

The standard rifles suffer from low fire rate. Their basic function is to attack enemies or animals that are far away. They deal more damage than repeater rifles. Bolt Action Rifle receives our recommendation. You can get it for free after Preaching Forgiveness as He Went main quest in chapter 3. This rifle beats Springfield Rifle in accuracy and reload.

The best sniper rifle in RDR2

As for the sniper rifles, you get your first piece during the main storyline – it is called Rolling Block Rifle. Arthur receives this weapon when he visits the gunsmith in Valentine during The Sheep and the Goats main quest. This weapon will last you for a long time.

You can think about switching to another rifle when you reach chapter 6. There, you can get Carcano Rifle which has better fire rate and reload rate. Regardless of which sniper rifle you have, remember that these weapons are for long-distance shots. Use it to eliminate enemies and animals that are far away. Don’t use them at a medium distance. Here, it is better to use a bolt action or a repeater rifle.

The best shotguns in RDR2

The first good shotgun is Double-Barreled Shotgun – you can get it rather fast, during Paying a Social Call main quest in chapter 2. The shotgun is hanging right above the chimney in the bandits’ cabin (the same chimney that has the stash with money) – the picture above shows this weapon. If you miss this moment, you can always buy a Double-Barreled Shotgun for $95.

Semi-Auto Shotgun is even better. The default way of acquiring this weapon is to purchase it for $225. The shotgun isn’t available right away, you need to complete A Fine Night of Debauchery available in chapter 4.

There is also an alternate way of getting Semi-Auto Shotgun. Head to Watson’s Cabin located north-west of Wallace Station. The shotgun is hidden in the basement.

Best weapons for early game playthrough

For an early Red Dead Redemption 2 playthrough, focus on cheap, easily obtainable guns that cover close, medium, and long range while staying versatile. Early on, the best setup is usually a strong revolver or pistol pair plus the Lancaster Repeater and the Bolt Action Rifle when it unlocks.

Core early-game guns

  • Schofield Revolver

    • High damage, solid accuracy, and good rate of fire make it one of the best early sidearms.

    • You can get it very early via story missions and then buy another at the gunsmith to dual-wield.

  • Volcanic Pistol

    • Extremely high pistol damage with decent accuracy, ideal if you like slower but harder-hitting shots.

    • Works well paired with a faster revolver like the Schofield for flexibility.

Best early repeater and rifle

  • Lancaster Repeater

    • Excellent all-rounder: good damage, high fire rate, big magazine, and accuracy suitable for most fights.

    • It quickly becomes the main workhorse weapon for early and mid-game encounters.

  • Bolt Action Rifle

    • Strong single-shot damage and accuracy, making it great for early long-range combat and hunting large animals.

    • Unlock it as soon as possible to cover distance fights that your repeater struggles with.

Early shotguns worth grabbing

  • Pump-Action Shotgun

    • Very strong at close range with good spread and damage, ideal for interiors and ambushes.

    • Handles crowds and close-quarters missions much more safely than revolvers alone.

  • Double-Barrel Shotgun

    • Massive burst damage up close, great for panic situations or charging enemies.

    • Best kept as a situational weapon for tight spaces rather than general use.

Practical early-game tips

  • Prioritize:

    • One strong revolver (Schofield), one high-damage pistol (Volcanic), Lancaster Repeater, and a shotgun for close-quarters.

  • Spend money first on:

    • Weapon cleaning, basic accuracy/damage upgrades, and good ammo types rather than constantly buying new guns.

  • Swap as you progress:

    • As soon as you start picking up unique revolvers (like Granger’s or Flaco’s), upgrade your early Schofield/Volcanic setup with those better variants.

If you say which chapter you are in and whether you prefer rifles, repeaters, or sidearms, a more specific “buy this next” list can be suggested.

Which early weapons scale best with a strength build

Strength-scaling early weapons depend heavily on which game you mean, but in most action RPGs they share the same traits: high base physical damage, good stagger/poise damage, and at least B-A scaling in Strength when upgraded. Below is a general rule-of-thumb list that matches how early Strength builds are usually optimized.

What to look for

  • High base physical damage: Weapons with naturally large AR (attack rating) benefit the most from raw Strength investment.

  • Good Strength scaling: Aim for at least C scaling at base that improves to B or better with upgrades/infusions, as this multiplies your Strength stat more efficiently.

  • Heavy class types: Greatswords, ultra/colossal swords, great hammers, and greataxes almost always scale best with Strength and give strong stagger.

Common early Strength standouts (generic patterns)

  • Mace / club-type weapons

    • Usually available very early, cheap, and have strong Strength scaling with excellent poise damage for their weight.

    • Short range, but great for learning spacing and hit-confirming guard breaks.

  • Greatsword-class weapons

    • Early greatswords or “large swords” often come with solid base damage and good Strength scaling, and remain viable into late game when fully upgraded.

    • Their wide swing arcs are forgiving for new players and excellent for crowd control.

  • Greataxes and great hammers

    • Often obtained slightly later in the opening area but still “early game”; they hit extremely hard and scale very well with heavy Strength investment.

    • Their drawback is slower swing speed, so they reward learning boss openings and stamina management.

How to check if a weapon fits a Strength build

  • Look at the attribute scaling letters: prioritize anything that leans toward Strength (e.g., C/B/A in Strength and low Dexterity scaling).

  • Two-handing the weapon effectively increases your Strength contribution, making some heavy weapons usable earlier than their listed requirement suggests.

If you specify the exact game (for example Elden Ring, Dark Souls 3, Lies of P, etc.), a precise list of named early weapons that scale best with Strength in that title can be provided.
