A mysterious sickness, cursed talismans, and a haunted mine—Red Dead Redemption 2’s “The Wisdom of the Elders” takes you deep into the eerie heart of Butcher Creek, where superstition and danger collide. As Arthur Morgan, unravel the truth behind a village’s dark curse, fend off wild “demons,” and uncover secrets buried in toxic shadows. Will you bring salvation to Butcher Creek, or will its darkness consume you?
Unlocking the mission and the first visit in Butcher Creek
You can start this mission in chapter 5. The quest marker will appear west of Van Horn Trading Post (picture 1). Examine the area below the train bridge. Arthur finds a man called Lemuel – the man asks for help (picture 2).
Pick up the man, stow him on your horse, and take to Butcher Creek. Place the man on the ground, near one of the cabins. Lemuel will attack Arthur. Defeat him. The man is ill which means that he won’t be a challenging opponent. Speak with Obediah Hinton to end the first part of this mission.
The second meeting with the people in Butcher Creek
Wait about 24 hours – after that, the game should add a new quest marker. Go to Butcher Creek. Arthur must defeat “demons”, ill dogs that have appeared in the village. Follow their barking (you can also use the mini-map). Dogs are easy to kill. Use the Dead Eye when one of them charges at Arthur.
Go back to Obediah. Watch the cut-scene. You will meet a suspicious Native American.
Destroying the talismans
You can now start the third part of the mission. Arthur must find and destroy 13 cursed talismans. Use the Eagle Eye to find these objects – they are marked yellow (see the picture above). Destroy them with any weapon. Examine the area marked white – the forest and both shores. Go back to Obediah once you are done.
Investigating the mine
You now have to go to the mine west of Annesburg. Remove the planks – this will reveal the entrance.
Take out your lantern to cast some light. Reach the area marked yellow – Arthur will discover poisoned water. The main entrance gets blocked. However, you can follow a different corridor. Pay attention to small streams – they will help you find the exit. Move in the opposite direction to the water. After that, you have to go through the waterfall (the picture above).
