Mission start
If you wish to start collecting legendary fish in Red Dead Redemption 2, you must start a side mission. The mission marker can be found near the lake north of the gang’s camp in chapter 3.
In the region marked on the first screenshot, you will find a fisherman’s hut. That’s where you begin the mission.
Talk to an angler Jeremy Gill, who is fishing from the small pier. He will give you the order to supply him with the legendary fish you can catch throughout the game world. He will give you his business card and a map of legendary fishing grounds (Legendary Fish Map). You can fish for legendary fish in any order and send them to Jeremy by post. It’s best to do it as you get them, as some fish are so big that you don’t have a place to store them, and if you lose the fish, you’ll have to catch it again.
Quick tips
Buy a lure – before you start catching legendary fish, go to Bait Shop. It is located at Lagras. Buy Special Lake Lure and Special River Lure there.
Secure the area – some of the places where the need to fish is dangerous. You should get down to fishing only after you kill all enemies around you. This applies mainly to crocodiles, which can get in the way of you fishing at any time.
Don’t overdo it – there are 14 legendary fish on the map. Do not try to collect them all at once. Fishing can be tiring and time-consuming, and also tiresome for your hands. If you fish for a few good hours, it will get worse and worse. It’s worth taking a break from time to time and taking advantage of other activities available in the game.
Look closely at the map – in large water reservoirs, fish only swim in a certain area. Look at the map and estimate exactly where you should cast your fishing rod. Sometimes moving a few meters will significantly increase your chances of getting the legendary fish.
Pay attention to weather conditions – if there is a storm, terrible wind or rain outside, wait. In strong winds, fishing will be much harder and the fish will have a better chance of escaping.
Look at the water – cast the rod only in places where you can see a shoal of fish. If there is an empty place in the water, casting the rod there will result in a long time of waiting for the fish to react.
Focus on the game – if you have already cast a rod, look bravely at the monitor. Catching the legendary fish is a complicated and long process. You need to be focused, if the fish is already grabbing your hook, take advantage of the opportunity, pull the rod and try to catch it. If you don’t focus on the rod, many specimens can escape.
Don’t pay attention to the time of day – in Red Dead Redemption 2, the time of day does not affect fishing. You can fish both in the morning and in the middle of the night. Everything depends on your personal comfort.
You can only get a fish once… – if you catch a legendary fish and send it by post to Jeremy, you won’t be able to get the fish again. These are unique, single specimens.
…but if you lose a legendary fish it will go back to the river – but if you accidentally lose your legendary fish it will go back to the water. Regardless of whether you lost it through your own death or through the fall of your horse. Remember, however, that if the fish is not in the water or waiting in the sack on your horse, it may be lying somewhere on the road. In this case, check the map carefully.
What are the best tips for catching legendary fish quickly
Here are some of the best tips for catching legendary fish quickly in Red Dead Redemption 2:
-
Use the Right Bait: Ensure you use the correct special lure for the region where the legendary fish is located. For example, use a Special River Lure for fish in rivers and a Special Swamp Lure for those in swamps.
-
Timing is Everything: Fish during the day, preferably at dawn, as many fish tend to disappear at night.
-
Advanced Reeling Technique: When reeling in a fish, move the left thumbstick up and down repeatedly. This helps pull the fish in and out, making it easier to catch1. When the fish is tired, pull down on the left stick and spin the right analog stick in the direction indicated by the game2.
-
Control the Fish: When the fish pulls away, move the left thumbstick in the opposite direction and click in on the right thumbstick to prevent line spooling2.
-
Deliver the Fish Safely: Once caught, store the fish on your horse and transport it carefully to avoid losing it.
