Additional information: it is a not-too-demanding mission, although it is not devoid of several stunning moments. Towards the end of this mission, you will also learn how to use the car garage system that will allow you to fix, repaint and tune your vehicles.
Mission 6 – Father/Son full walkthrough
Michael’s estate
To start this mission, you need to go to Michael’s estate in Rockford Hills, i.e. the location that you have already visited during the previous mission. What is interesting, is that you can reach villa both as Franklin and Michael. Which character you choose will have bearing on the beginning of the mission. Still, I recommend that you reach the mission’s starting point as Michael, because the game will present you with the most important places in the estate, and also play an additional cutscene.
The truck with the stolen yacht
Still before you leave Michael’s estate (the game will automatically cut to this character and lock, temporarily, character selection) his son Jimmy will call him to inform him that the family yacht has been stolen, and that he is onboard of the boat that is being transported on land. Exit the villa and get onto Amanda’s car (Ubermacht Sentinel). Wait for Franklin to join you and drive to Pacific Bluffs, a district neighboring the western motorway. After you near the point marked by the game, you should notice the truck with the stolen yacht.
You need to get to the truck close enough, for Franklin to jump onto the trailer.
Follow the truck and try to avoid bumping into the other cars while driving, especially that Michael does not have the skill of slowing down time while driving. Your task is to near the truck in such a way, as to enable Franklin to jump onto it and mount the yacht. Note – while preparing for the jump by Franklin, you cannot perform any abrupt movements with the steering wheel but, since the truck is going along the motorway, this should not be too difficult.
If you want to, you can follow the game’s suggestion and switch to the “movie camera”, especially that the game will not allow you to cut to Franklin. Continue your drive behind the truck and watch over your companion’s actions. You need to be ready to save Franklin’s life, by shooting on the head the opponent that Franklin is struggling with.
Soon, another important moment will come, and this time around you will have to save Jimmy. As soon as Michael’s son hangs down above the highway, drive under the yacht’s mast, so that Jimmy can drop down into your car (the above screenshot). Note – If you want to complete this mission in 100%, you need to hurry about this action! Finally, get back behind the truck speeding to enable Franklin to take another jump.
The car garage
The attempt to retrieve the stolen yacht was, unfortunately unsuccessful, because the car driven by Michael will fail. Listen to Franklin’s suggestion and drive towards the Los Santos Customs car garage in the Western part of the city (it neighbors the airport, among others). After you reach your destination, park your car in the circle marked by the game and watch the cutscene.
Repairing Amanda’s car is the only compulsory action
Soon, the game will cut to Franklin and you will be playing him until the end of this mission. Drive up to the garage’s door. To complete the current part of the mission, you only need to select the car repair (which is free of charge) although, if you have too much cash on you, you can also try tuning your vehicle. The only one thing left to do now is taking Jimmy back home. Take your time while doing that and try not to bump into anything to prevent damaging the freshly-repaired car.

What are the key differences between starting the mission as Michael or Franklin
When starting the “Father/Son” mission in Grand Theft Auto V, there are key differences depending on whether you choose Michael or Franklin:
-
Starting as Michael: You will see a full cutscene involving Tracey and Amanda arguing while Michael relaxes by the pool. This provides additional context to the family dynamics and Michael’s character.
-
Starting as Franklin: The cutscene with Tracey and Amanda is omitted, and Michael will already be by the pool when the mission begins. This skips the family argument scene, focusing directly on the mission’s objectives.
These differences primarily affect the narrative introduction and do not alter the mission’s overall objectives or gameplay.
How does the storyline differ when starting missions as Michael versus Franklin
In Grand Theft Auto V, the storyline does not significantly differ based on whether you start a mission as Michael or Franklin, as the overall narrative remains linear. However, there are some differences in how missions are introduced and experienced:
-
Cutscenes and Introductions: Starting a mission as Michael often provides a more complete cutscene, offering additional context or character interactions. For example, in the “Marriage Counseling” mission, starting as Michael gives you the full cutscene, while starting as Franklin might skip some parts. Similarly, in “Father/Son,” starting as Michael includes a full family argument scene, which is omitted if you start as Franklin.
-
Character Switching Mechanics: Some missions, like “Marriage Counseling,” utilize the character switching mechanic effectively, allowing you to play as both Michael and Franklin in the same mission. This can enhance gameplay by providing different perspectives and actions, such as Michael driving while Franklin shoots3.
-
Linear Storyline: Despite these differences, the main storyline remains consistent regardless of which character you choose to start with. Missions can be completed in various orders, but the core narrative does not branch out significantly based on the starting character.
Overall, while starting missions as Michael or Franklin can offer slightly different experiences, the core storyline of GTA V remains unchanged.
