How to proceed with the quest?
To proceed with the quest involving Gurranq, the Beast Clergyman in Elden Ring, players should first locate him at the Bestial Sanctum, which is situated in Caelid. Upon arrival, interact with Gurranq to initiate the questline. He will ask for Deathroot, a key item that can be found by defeating certain enemies throughout the game. As you collect Deathroot, return to Gurranq to receive rewards and further instructions. Be prepared for multiple encounters, as you will need to gather several pieces of Deathroot to fully complete the quest and unlock Gurranq’s unique abilities and items.
You won’t find Gurranq to be especially talkative at first. He won’t say a word until you have obtained one of the Deathroot key items.
Once you get one, Gurranq will ask you to feed it to him. Each time you feed the beast, he will reward you with an item, weapon, or incantation, depending on how many deathroots you give him.
There’s a total of 9 deathroots in the game. They can be obtained by defeating specific bosses. You’ll get the Beast Eye after you feed Gurranq the first deathroot, which makes things easier.
Whenever you approach a dungeon or a boss and you get notified that “The Beast Eye quivers”, you’ll know you’ll obtain a deathroot for beating the nearby boss. They are usually obtained by beating certain opponents or discovering specific chests:
- The Black Knife Assassin – he can be found in Limgrave, more specifically in the Deathtouched Catacombs. Upon defeating him, open the chest in the arena. Inside, you’ll find a deathroot.
- The Tibia Mariner – he can be found in four different locations and each time you defeat him, you’ll obtain a deathroot: in Limgrave, more specifically in the Summonwater Village, in the east section of Liurnia of the Lakes, in the Altus Plateau, more specifically in the Wyndham Ruins and in the Mountaintops of the Giants, on the edge between the Main Gate of Castle Sol and the Snow Valley Ruins Overlook.
- Cemetery Shade – they can be found in the Liurnia of the Lakes, more specifically in the Black Knife Catacombs. Once you beat them, a chest will appear in the arena. You’ll find another deathroot inside.
- Red Wolf of the Champion – it is located in the Mt. Gelmir region, more specifically in the Gelmir Hero’s Grave. The deathroot is hidden in a chest that you can only open after you’ve defeated the boss.
- Ulcerated Tree Spirit – it is found in the Giant Mountain Summits region, namely in the Giants’ Mountaintop Catacombs. After defeating the boss, you just need to open the chest in the arena.
- Stray Mimic’s Tear – it is located in the Giant Mountain Summits, more specifically in the Hidden Path to the Haligtree. The deathroot is hidden in a chest which you’ll find after defeating the boss.
After feeding four deathroots to the Beast, the next time you encounter Gurranq, he will attack you as soon as you arrive at the Bestial Sanctum. You don’t have to kill him, however. You just need to attack him a few times until he calms down. You’ll be able to talk to him normally the next time you see him and continue to get your rewards.

What are the best strategies to defeat Gurranq in combat
To effectively defeat Gurranq, the Beast Clergyman in Elden Ring, players can employ several strategies that capitalize on his mechanics and weaknesses:
- Damage Threshold: After giving Gurranq four Deathroots, he becomes hostile. To calm him down, you need to inflict around 1000 damage without killing him. This can be achieved through hit-and-run tactics or using ranged attacks from a safe distance.
- Use Spirit Ashes: Summoning Spirit Ashes can help divert Gurranq’s attention, allowing you to deal damage while minimizing your own risk. This tactic is particularly useful for players who prefer a more strategic approach to combat.
- Environmental Baiting: Lure Gurranq toward the entrance of the Bestial Sanctum and engage the Black Blade Kindred outside. The Kindred’s attacks can deal damage to Gurranq, potentially pushing him past the threshold needed to calm him down. This method may require you to die in the process, but it can simplify the fight significantly.
- Poison and Rot: Utilizing spells like Night’s Mist or items that inflict poison or rot can whittle down Gurranq’s health over time. You can retreat outside the Sanctum while the poison takes effect, allowing you to avoid direct confrontation until he calms down.
- Frost Damage: Applying frost damage through frost pots or spells can also be effective. Two frost pots are usually sufficient to trigger a frost effect, which will help in subduing him without direct combat.
- Positioning: Position yourself strategically within the Sanctum. Engaging from the doorway allows you to dodge his attacks while still being able to land hits when he approaches. This positioning can help mitigate damage taken during the fight.
By combining these strategies—particularly focusing on ranged attacks and environmental manipulation—players can effectively manage and ultimately defeat Gurranq without succumbing to his powerful assaults.
