Whether you’re a seasoned player or just starting out, mastering this system is key to thriving in the dark and treacherous world of Diablo 4.

What are Whispers of the Dead?

In Diablo 4, Whispers of the Dead refers to a unique endgame activity that players can engage in after completing the main storyline. This system is centered around the Tree of Whispers, located in Hawezar, which offers players a series of time-limited mini-quests known as “Whispers.” These tasks typically involve defeating enemies, clearing dungeons, or completing specific objectives, rewarding players with Grim Favors. Accumulating these favors allows players to return to the Tree for valuable rewards, including gear and crafting materials, making Whispers of the Dead an essential component for enhancing gameplay and progression in the game’s endgame content.

Whispers of the Dead or Grim Favors are mechanics in Diablo 4 that you will unlock after completing the story, i.e. in the so-called end game. Whispers of the Dead consists of completing commissions for the Tree of Whispers, which you encounter during the story campaign. For completing objectives, you will receive Grim Favors – a currency that you can exchange for rewards at the Tree of Whispers in the form of bundles with rare or legendary items.

Objectives from the Tree of Whispers can be found on the map – they are marked with pink icons.

On the world map, you will recognize the Whispers of the Dead by the pink and red icons. These are simple activities consisting mainly of the extermination of monsters. Objectives and tasks are simple – for example, kill 100 monsters of a given type in the corresponding region, clear the cellar, or complete one of the dungeon’ Aspects. Commissions differ in number of Grim Favors you will be rewarded with.

  1. cellars, killing enemies, finding a dead body or events – 1 Grim Favor;
  2. collecting materials from enemies, rituals, PvP in The Fields Of Hatred, and Legion events – 3 Grim Favors;
  3. completing the dungeons, defeating the world boss, and defeating the boss in PvP (Seething Abomination) – 5 Grim Favors;

Once you’ve earned 10 Grim Favors, you’ll need to head to the Tree of Whispers for your reward, otherwise, you won’t be able to complete any more bounties. However, exceeding the limit of Grim Favors doesn’t mean losing them, they will count when you start collecting Favors again. The Grim Favor counter is always visible on the world map in the form of a red bar.

Whispers of the Dead is a mechanic that, unlike Helltide, is constantly present on the world map, but similar to it, it rotates – that is, the location of quests changes from time to time. Each objective has its own timer – you can check the remaining time to complete the task by hovering the mouse over the icon.

How to unlock the Tree of Whispers?

To unlock the Tree of Whispers in Diablo 4, you must first complete the entire campaign. Following the conclusion of the storyline, specifically after the ending cinematic and interacting with Lorath, you will receive a new side quest that leads you to the Tree of Whispers. Located in the swamp region of Hawezar, Sanctuary, this iconic landmark is marked by a giant tree adorned with severed heads. Accessing the Tree involves navigating to its designated location via a convenient Waypoint, marking the beginning of your engagement with the endgame system known as the Tree of Whispers1.

To unlock Whispers of the Dead, simply complete the Diablo 4 campaign with any character on any difficulty. You will then unlock the Priority Quest – Whispers of the Dead, and learn about its mechanism. There is no other requirement – you don’t need to be level 50 or unlock Nightmare difficulty. After beating the game and completing the epilogue, you can complete bounties for the Tree of Whispers and earn Grim Favors.

Rewards

The Tree of Whispers in Diablo 4 offers players a rewarding endgame experience through the collection of Grim Favors. By completing various activities known as Whispers, players can accumulate these favors and exchange them for valuable rewards at the Tree. Once ten Grim Favors are collected, players can choose from three distinct reward caches, each tailored to specific item types such as weapons or armor. Notably, there is a chance to receive a Legendary reward bundle, ensuring at least one high-quality item from the selection. This system not only enhances gear progression but also provides essential resources like XP, gold, and crafting materials, making it an integral part of the game’s endgame mechanics.

Occasionally at random times, you will find orange chests to choose from at the Tree of Whispers. It is worth choosing them because, unlike white rewards, they have a guaranteed Legendary item as a reward.

As a reward for collecting 10 Grimm Favors, you can go to the Tree of Whispers to choose one of three rewards. Note – Legendary and Unique items are not guaranteed unless the reward is marked with orange on the list. So always choose Legendary items, and if they’re not listed, the ones you need most right now. As a reward, in addition to Legendary items, you can get a lot of experience points, some gold, yellow items, elixirs, and seals to unlock the Nightmare Dungeon. This is why it is believed that Whispers of the Dead is not the best end game because the rewards are not very valuable.

Keep in mind that Whispers of the Dead is a way to get your first Nightmare Sigils – another end game mechanic that will allow you to upgrade glyphs.

Tips

To maximize your success with the Tree of Whispers in Diablo 4, focus on completing dungeons, World Bosses, and Seething Abominations, as these tasks offer up to five Grim Favors each, making them efficient choices for farming. Pay attention to the time limits for each Whisper objective; if you run out of time, you won’t earn any Grim Favors. Additionally, prioritize collecting ten Grim Favors before returning to the Tree to claim your rewards, as this will reset your progress and allow you to start fresh. Be strategic about which reward cache you select, as some offer better loot potential, including Legendary items.

  1. Due to the rather minor rewards, Whispers of the Dead is better done along with other activities and end game events such as Helltide. This is how you complete quests in Helltide, collecting Aberrant Cinders while completing quests for the Tree of Whispers. You can then claim rewards for Helltide and Whispers of the Dead.
  2. After switching to Nightmare difficulty (i.e. World Tier III), Whispers of the Dead will be a good way to get your first Nightmare Sigils.
  3. When choosing a reward, pick up what you currently need – remember however that orange chests guarantees you get a Legendary item.
  4. If you want I to collect Grim Favors and rewards from the Tree of Whispers quickly, skip dungeons. They take the most time to complete. It is better to take part in much faster events.
